Second generation HTS tapes like Rare-Earth-Barium-Copper-Oxide (REBCO tapes) are very promising conductors for high field magnetic applications as it possess superior mechanical properties and current carrying capacity even at very high magnetic field, but should be assembled in a cable.
Several cabling concepts are proposed of which Conductor on Round Core (CORC) cable configuration is viable for next generation high field magnets. The REBCO tape is wound around a core at an angle in a helical shape so that the strain in it will be compressive. Since the CORC cable was proposed in 2009, there is limited experimental work done with CORC cables. The simulation works for the mechanical and thermal loading of REBCO tapes is carried out in COMSOL Multiphysics software from the Computational Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, Kerala, India. The further study is planned at University of Twente, Netherlands which is focused on experiment related to mechanical loading of CORC cables.
